The 20th China International Talent Exchange Conference was opened online recently, at which the Minister of Science and Technology, Wang Zhigang, stated that, for the first time in 2021, more than 1 million students had returned to China to start a new business and that a cumulative total of 1,180,000 work permits had been issued to foreigners. In addition, our national innovation index rose from 22nd place in 2017 to 12th place in 2021, with a total investment of RMB 2790 billion in research and development; technical contracts totalling RMB 37 trillion, high-technology exports amounting to $980 billion, and international patent applications amounting to more than 69,000, the world's largest. At present, our country has established scientific and technological cooperation with more than 160 countries and regions around the world, participating in more than 200 international organizations and multilateral mechanisms, actively participates in a range of major international scientific programmes and projects, such as ITER, GEO and SKA, and works to promote international exchange and cooperation in areas such as health, climate change, clean energy, artificial intelligence, biomedical medicine and modern agriculture, and to contribute more Chinese scientific and technological programmes to solving global problems.
