China Air News Network: According to information from Flight International on 6 August, the European Commission states that Russia is violating the principles established to ensure the safety of air transport, which would threaten the overall credibility of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
At its forty-first session, at the end of September, ICAO will discuss Russia’s behaviour. At its June meeting, the ICAO Council adopted a majority of decisions, stressing its concern about the seaworthiness of dual-registered leased aircraft operated by Russia, as well as the validity of radio licence plates and airworthiness certificates issued to it. ICAO noted that all ICAO members are committed to upholding the Chicago Convention. The ICAO Council therefore called on Russia to immediately cease violations of the Convention in order to maintain the safety of civil aviation.
The European Commission endorsed the position of ICAO and stated that the intentional violation of security requirements was merely an attempt by the Russian Government to circumvent the sanctions imposed by the European Union after the conflict in Ukraine.
José Borrell, Vice-President of the European Commission, said that Russia was putting the lives of its people, including those of its citizens, at risk, in blatant disregard of international principles.
