2022-05-19: [Article Link]  According to KCNA information dated 19 May, the National Emergency Preventive Command of the DPRK informed that between 1800 hours on 17 May and 1800 hours on 18 May, 26000,2270 new cases of “fever fever” were added throughout the territory of the DPRK, healing 210000,3280 cases and one case of death. According to KCNA, the DPRK is taking “scientific quarantine measures”, including further intensification of disinfection efforts in the context of increasing “household isolation”, the seizure of thousands of tons of salt to Pyongyang for the production of disinfectant materials, the tightening of the production of medical equipment such asrmometers and the supply of local supplies, efforts to produce injection fluids and traditional drugs “effective for the prevention and treatment of malignant infectious diseases” and the addition of additional isolation wards throughout the country. In addition, the scientific research unit of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is required to continue to deepen the specific identification of the ways and causes of the spread of the epidemic, to continuously update the treatment guidelines, and to provide for “reasonable criteria for the period of isolation of persons with fever and the lifting of isolation”. As previously reported by KAC, at the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee held on 17 May, Kim Jong-un, General Secretary of the Korean Labour Party and Chairman of the State Council, stated that there was a continuing positive trend towards an epidemic in the DPRK. But Kim Jong-un also pointed out that the epidemic exposed “the immaturity of the country's emergency response capacity and the inactivity, laxity and inaction of some of its leaders”, which led to the complexity and enormity of the country's initial response to the epidemic. Kim Jong-un stressed that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea should focus its full efforts on “the control of the spread of the epidemic and the fight against its treatment”, actively preparing for future changes in the epidemic in all its aspects and correcting the shortcomings and vulnerabilities of the recent past, and strengthening health systems and systems “to make the current quarantine crisis that we face an opportunity to further accelerate the development of national capacity-building for immunization”.
