According to EFI Managua, President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua stated on 18 May that he would not attend the Summit of the Americas to be held in Los Angeles, California, United States, from 6 to 10 June.
According to the report, Ortega stressed at the official event to commemorate the 127th anniversary of the birth of Nicaragua's hero Augusto C. Sandino (1895-1934): “I'm going to tell the Americans here: forget it, we're not interested in attending the summit.”
“The scene displayed by the rulers of the United States at what they call the “famous” Summit of the Americas is shameful.” He said.
He went on to say, “This summit will not make anyone proud, and worse, it will be embarrassing.” In his speech, Ortega accused the United States of saying, “The Americans consider themselves masters of our peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean”.
“They say today that we are the backyard, and tomorrow that we are the front yard, but to them we are just their dump yard.” He accuses.
It was reported that Ortega also urged Latin American and Caribbean Governments to respect and strengthen the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.
He noted that the Latin American Presidents who dared to question Washington's exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the Summit had a “bold attitude”.
Ortega, which advocates the strengthening of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States through sovereignty and autonomy, has become “the crossroads of Latin America and the Caribbean”.
“We must protect our own people so that we (the United States) respect us. Don't forget we have the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.” He firmly said.
He noted that the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States was a “strong tool” through which Latin American and Caribbean States could meet with other major Powers, such as China, Russia and India, as well as with the European Union.
